I believe that as we grow up that we often imagine what our lives will look like. We think of the career we will have, the places we'll go, and probably think about raising a family with the love of our life. These feelings seem to be pretty universal, so years later as we grow older and start making these dreams come true there can be complications that were unanticipated. You are ready to have a baby, and it seems like nature is saying no! All these years you were responsible and very careful to ensure you were able to reach these places of achievements and once you felt you could make some room for this new bundle of joy it just doesn’t seem to be happening. It seems to be one of the greatest joys in life is to share your journey with someone you love and start a new adventure together. So, what happens when you’re ready and your body is saying, “No?”
Contrary to popular belief this issue is not reserved for mature women. This issue happens to young people as well. A previous patient had a heavy flow while menstruating, so she was instructed that getting on birth control when she was younger would help her manage this issue. Years later once she was ready to have children, she got off birth control anticipating that she would be pregnant the next month. This isn’t a typical result. It often takes a few cycles frequently to give your body and hormones a chance to reset after being on birth control. Birth control can mask many issues like amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and many other conditions. Birth control pills trick the body to not get pregnant and make things seem normal. Once a patient discontinues birth control it usually takes about 3 cycles for your body and hormones to get back to normal.
Similar to the idea that getting off “the pill” and you will expect to be pregnant next month, it should also be known that one treatment alone cannot promise instant results. Our treatments facilitate balance and normal periods, so it can make the patient feel better and have a better chance of conceiving. This isn’t to discourage your expectations, but only to help manage them. I have seen patients who were told by their reproductive specialist that there was nothing they could do, maybe lose weight. She was pregnant the next cycle and came back for baby number two (Oliver). She came in two days post-delivery for a treatment and I got to meet the Little man.
Acupuncture is effective in that it can also be used to assist Western medicine and supplement its approach in ways it alone couldn’t provide. Think of Eastern and Western medicine using different tools and one way is not better than the other; they just offer different solutions using different tool boxes. A mechanic wouldn’t use the same tools as a plumber and vice versa.
